Bio of Needham A. Mayes, PhD.

Needham A. Mayes was born in New Bern, North Carolina during the Great Depression, This is after the time  that  blacks outnumbered whites in the distinguished southern community. Needham dropped out of school at age 14, but later returned and graduated from St. Joseph's Academy. He realized that education was the key to a promising future.

By the time Needham reached puberty, "Jim Crow" was in full effect and the Klu Kluk Klan organization was very visible in the community. Because of his involvement with the NAACP, Needham's Uncle George Williams received death threats from the racist organization and was forced to leave town. At the time, he did not realize that one day he would have the opportunity to complete the work with the NAACP that his uncle had begun so long ago .This is our Legacy, we all have an obligation to  carry on the work of our ancestors and others who struggled and died for us.

Through the years, Needham was faced with many of life's challenges; some that caused him to venture off of his course. As he reflects, Needham now understands that his journey was a part of a much larger plan. At age 40, he defied the odds by overcoming his speech impediment, homelessness, alcohol abuse and severe depression .Needham says that a power greater than he walked him to an alcohol treatment center where with the encouragement of his Change Agent, Needham enrolled in Adelphi University where he received his Associate's (AA)degree in 1977, his Bachelor's (BA) in 1979,and ten (10) years later, his Masters of Social Work (MSW) in 1989, and finally, his Doctorate of Philosophy (PhD) with a distinction in Social Work, about ten (10) years later in 2000.
